PLA’s South West MR was formed in February 1950 with Helong as its first commander and Deng Xiaping as its first political commissar.
In December 1969, the Xizang MR was downgraded to a provincial military district and subordinated to the Chengdu MR. And in August 1985, Kunming MR was disbanded and its troops ressigned to Chengdu MR.
India is Chengdu MR’s primary concern and pacify and govern Tibet region are its secondary task.

Coducts long range real echo recon missions by flying at tree to level 5 to 20 m height. PLAdaily 3-8-2002. Its attack group can operate up to 140 sorties.
The picture from PLAdaily showed three types of Mi Helicopters S-70, one Mi-171 (armed with rocket launchers), and Mi-17V5.
It has 14 S-70C2, 10 Mil-171 and 10 Mil-171V5.

Chengdu MR’s Heliocpter Regiment has three squadron, and staffed by large parentage of ethnic minorities.
