Lanzhou Military Region (1/4)

Cmdr Li Ganyang replaced General Guo Boxiong in 2002;

General Li took part in the Second Sino-Vietnam war and was victorious in the Laoshan campaign. He was cmdr of 1st GA before prompted as cmdr of Lanzhou MR

Created in November 1948 as North West MR, with He Long as its first commander. It was renamed as Lanzhou MR in April 1955.

The Xinjiang MR was renamed the Wulumuqi MR in May 1979 and merged with Lanzhou MR in August 1985.

The main task of Lanzhou MR is to act as a reserve area to counter a Soviet invasion. During the late 60s, over 2 million PLA regulars and militia were stated in this area, to cut the Soviet force approach Beijing off. During its peak of late 1970s, its orbat included majorities of the PLA independent tank divisions.

Due to its remoteness, Lanzhou Military Regions hosted a number of PLA nuclear research centers and weapon test sites, including nuclear storage and missile silos.
