PLA Navy East Sea Fleet (ESF)

East Sea Fleet (DongHai JianDui)

The PLAN East Sea Fleet was build on surrounded and defected KMT naval vessels, South China Field Army’s Vice commander Zhang Aiping was entrusted to build up this fleet. With over 10,000 staff from PLAN 30th and 35th army, the fleet was commissioned in Feb 3rd, 1950, and renamed as East Sea Fleet in Oct 24, 1955.

It has the defense responsibility for the East China sea including the Taiwan Strait. After 1949, the naval action in this area has involved, in almost cases, the PLAN and the Taiwan Navy.

The fleet’s principal combat strength is in its large numbers of Fast Attack Craft of various sizes. Partly this was because of Taiwan Strait limited the chance of ship to ship actions.
