"In China's military history, this division is a famous one, with a long pedigree of battle honours and celebrated names. It was founded in 1927, and its therefore one of the oldest units in the PLA. Out of the 1927 Nanchang Uprising, the Red Army, the forerunner of today's PLA, was born. The uprising itself was a disaster; an ambitious idea that ended in bitter failure, but it woud not be the first time in history that out of the ashes of failure victory emerged. Presevring its sense of history, the division still has seventeen companies which can trace their origins to this time. Two of the PLA's most revered commanders during hte Red Army period were closely associated with this unit; Marshals Chen Yi and Chu Teh"
