Special Administrative Regions Garrison

Lt General: Xiong ziren replaced Lt General Liu Zhenwu (recently promoted as cmdr of Guangzhou MR); People daily 7-7-2002

Political Commissar, Major-General Wang Yufa replaced Xiong Ziren:

Deputy Commanders:SrCol Zhou Borong and SrCol Yuan Shijun (Academy of Military Science PLA)

Normally under GuangZhou MR, but due to special status, CMC handles the affairs directly

Hong Kong Garrison

The only PLA unit to include Naval and Air force elements (4 Houjian class PGG, one squadron of J-8II and one squadron of Z-9 helicopter.

One special force company.

- Infantry Garrison Brigade (Air Assault) (53300)

Special force company started as a HK special force Platoon before the enlargement.

3 inf, 1 mech inf, 1 arty, and 1 engr btn, 1 recon/SpOps coy.

Ex-1st Red Regiment of 1st Red Division, 1st Red Army, formed 1927, one the oldest PLA unit. Was part of the 42 Group Army. One of the first Air Assault PLA units and consider to be one of the best equipped and trained.

2nd armor coy.

1st Red Regiment was 424th regiment, 142nd Division, 48th Army iin 1949. In Nov, 1952, 142nd division assigned to 55th Army, and 424th regiment renamed a 430th regiment. In Jan 1970, 144th division renamed to 163rd division and 430th regiment renamed as 487regiment.

- Logistics Base (53310) Shenzhou

Motor Transport Company (mdr Shao Fei)

A logistics support base for the garrison is located in Shenzhen. Only about 4,000 troops are present in Hong Kong at any one time, as elements rotate back and forth among its barracks’ locations in Hong Kong and across the border in Guangdong.

Its Motor Transport Company won unit citation as a model unit in 6-6-2002 Peopledaily.com.cn 6-7-2002 edition It was formed in March 1993

PLAdaily 7-23-2001 won one Unit Award Second Class, and three Unit Award Third Class.

- Naval Squadron (38081)

A total of 10 ships. PLAdaily HK handover special edition 7-2-1997

- Helocopter Regiment (PLAAF) (39968)

Cmdr: Col Li Guoxi, This unit also took part of the Tangshan earthquake rescue, Da Xingan Shan fire fighting and South China flood recuse works. PLAdaily HK handover special edition 7-2-1997.

Macau Garrison

1000 troops, including a pocket HQ (19 officers) (Academy of Military Science PLA).

Dennis Blasko stated "The Macao Garrison consists of about 500 personnel and is also commanded by a Major General. It is primarily an army unit, but has small contingents of PLA Air Force and Navy personnel. The unit is made up of an armored infantry (mechanized) company, motorized infantry (truck-mobile) company, a guards and reconnaissance unit, a communications unit, and other headquarters elements. On December 20, 1999, upon Macao’s reversion to PRC sovereignty, ten wheeled armored vehicles and about 60 other trucks and vehicles entered Macao. The Macao Garrison’s infantry and guards and reconnaissance units were transferred from the Hong Kong Garrison. Just as the Hong Kong Garrison as a logistics base outside of the Special Administrative Region, the Macao Garrison has a logistics support base in Zhuhai".

- Urban Light Cavalry Regiment (53400)

rapid reaction and combine arms operations. From warning (wake up) to fully armed on the move in 5 minutes (Academy of Military Science PLA)

Including Mech infantry company, motorized company, communication, recon elements, model of PLA light rapid reaction force.
