People's Liberation Army Division List

By Xinhui with special help from Ardy van den Heuvel
V. 3.4, 4/2001

Version 2.11 in which includes the 500,000 force cut of 1998. Entries on this page will be regularly updated. Readers should keep in mind that the PLA does not provide official Orbat figures. Analysts such as Mr. Chan scan published material to obtain clues to unit/formation numbers. The published information can be of differing quality, offer different interpretations from before, or simply be new. Under such conditions, reconciling different information is not an easy task for non-governmental analysts. This is particularly true in the case of divisions that have been reconfigured as brigades. In addition to the list below, there are 14 Unidentified Engineer regiments under the control of 4th department of the PLA (logistical) Each Group Armies have 2 mobile field hospitals and one Training unit. To increase mobility, since 1997, each Tank division is assigned an organic tank transport regiment. 38 GA, 39, GA and 54 GA are consider to be Rapid Deployment Group Army, in addition there are six Rapid Deployment Divisions from other Group Armies, Rapid Deployment status in PLA means all its major elements can be deploy to any part of China within two weeks.

The People's Libration Army was found on Aug 1, 1927.

A note on our formation naming/numbering convention:

"Unidentified Armor Brigade" means we do not know its number; 4 Motorized Division refers to the Fourth Motorized Division. The unit HQ's hometown is next to the unit number.
