The
Huang Pu Shipyard
A Photo Essay
by Timothy Yan

A military hospital ship under refit. It's a Qiongsha class hospital ship based on the Qiongsha class light troop transport. This one should be the Nankang hospital ship of the PLAN South Sea Fleet. Two of this 2200 tons vessels were build for the PLAN in the late 1980s. It's rumored that all four of the older Qiongsha class transports will be converted into hospital ships. The PLAN will be using their new build LST and LSD for future troop transporting missions.
From the photo, you can see the PLAN hospital ship is much smaller than that of the US Navy counterparts; which are all over 15,000 tons.

The front view of the first PLAN hospital ship. Unlike other Chinese military ships, the hospital ship does not have the hulk number painted on the bow of the ship. Perhaps that's an indication for a non-combatant vessel.

Side view with a good look of the hospital ship's smoke stacks. This side of the fence is the garden of Dr. Sun Yet-Sen's office in the Huang Pu Academy.

A second Qiongsha class hospital ship docks a short distance away in front of the main Huang Pu Academy site. It's surprise to see the only two hospital ships of the PLAN refits together at the same place and same time.
The other side of the fence is consider as the naval base. Which is suppose to be restricted to authorized personnel only. However, that didn't stop the academy visitors hanging out over there.
