The Huang Pu Shipyard
A Photo Essay

by Timothy Yan

The muscle powered sampan is a classic against a back-drop of modern machinery.
Life on earth was once simple, un-hurry and men are truly a part of nature.
...SARguy

The Pearl River traffic is normally strictly controlled by the River Control Service of the Maritime Police. However, non-motorized private vessels are probably exempted form the restriction.

Muscle Powered vs. Diesel Powered

The same guy and his muscle powered sampan. The incoming ship on the right is a maritime police vessel with its slanted red and blue stripes on the hulk. The US Coast Guard uses the similar color stripe pattern on their ships also. Although the cargo ship on the left looks like it's going to run over the poor sampan, but don't worry, it is not actually moving because it's anchored.

Rusting Ships

The color of water is actually looks better in the photo than in real life. It would not be wise to drink the water or swim in it. From the smell of it, it maybe flammable too.

The Old Woodie

An old and ugly wooden sampan with even uglier and rusting metal "modern ships" behind it.
For a small fee, this motorized sampan will take anyone across the Pearl river to the Changzhou Island.
