The Huang Pu Shipyard
A Photo Essay

by Timothy Yan

The Huang Pu Shipyard is located to the east of Guangzhou, a busy and prosperous metropolis in Southern China. The shipyard is a major facility for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN)'s South Sea Fleet. Although most of the new warship building is now done up north in Shanghai. The Huang Pu shipyard had completed two frigates in 2004. A Jiangwei II and a new 054 class FFG. The main focus of the shipyard seems had been shifted to largely refitting and rebuilding of older vessels.

A warship of the PLAN is refitting on the pier of the Huang Pu Shipyard. The 561 Shantou is apparently a Jianghu V class that was only commissioned in the earily 1990s. The Jianghu V class was specially build by the PLAN South Sea Fleet for operating in the hot tropical South China Sea. The 2000 tons frigate is one of the few PLAN ships that's equiped with centralized air-conditioning. All six ships of the class were named after cities in Southern China.

This photo was shot at long zoom across the Pearl River. The blue-ish gray haze that caused the poor quailty of picture, is the air pollution in the air. Guangzhou's air pollution is roughly five time worst than that of Los Angeles'. The deterioration of the environment is often the price to pay in China's rapid economic development.
