Chinese Military Aircraft Numbering System

by Rick Kamer

People's Libation Army Aviation:

Numbers in the 9XXXX series have been seen on helicopters and transports assigned directly to Army units. The letters LH precede the aircraft numbers. Not all of the units noted above are still active and some units, 11th Flying Academy (formerly 11th Air School) and 14th Flying Academy have changed the names of the units.

With the limited data available, it appears the construction of the registration numbers on these aircraft is different than Air Force or Naval aircraft. It seems the second digit is the unit indicator with the third digit indicating aircraft type. The final two digits would indicate the number of the aircraft. The same holds true, probably, for those aircraft with only 4 digits, the leading 9 being omitted.

If this number system is true, the aircraft breakdown thus far would be:

xx0xx
Y-8 (May include any transports)
xx1xx Z-11
xx2xx S-70C
xx3xx SA-342
xx7xx MI-17/171
xx9xx Z-9

For order of battle information of Army Aviation see AKC's army AOB.

The following registration numbers have been noted on Army Aviation Aircraft

Notice the Y-8, LH94001. A photo of this aircraft can bee found in Jane's All the World's Aircraft, 1999-2000, page 72.
