Type 88C Main Battle Tank: A Photo Essay
by Timothy Yan

The major difference between the Type 88C MBT and typical Russian tank designs is the turret. Whereas the Russian designs commently use cast turrets, the Chinese designs have been using welded turret since the original Type 85 MBT. The welded turret design offers stronger structure support and the ability of using different kind of materials in the construction.
Another area of difference is the fire control system. Until recently most Russian tanks use active IR search lights as night-vision due to the cost factor. Chinese MBTs have been using passive night-vision sights since the early 1980s. The Type 88C MBT has 2nd generation image intensification (starlight scope) night-vision sights with multi-axial stabilizer.
