The Chinese Civil War and the Birth of the PLA Tank Force
by Xinhui
The entire Huai-Hai Campaign lasted a total of 56 days, and 22 KMT armies with more then 500,000 troops were wiped out. Some estimated the KMT lost at 600,000. This marked the beginning of the end of Nationalist Regime in Mainland China. During the battle, the PLA paid a price for its inexperience with modern logistics system for supporting modern combined arms maneuver. Although the Communist won the campaign, however, the Special Column used too many resources and it was unable to keep up with the main infantry unit. The heavy M4 Sherman tanks were not suitable for most of the operations because they were too heavy to use most of the bridges that were across the numerous rivers and lakes in Central China. The lighter 14-ton M3 light tanks was preferred.
The Third Field Army finished the Chinese Civil War at the coast of Fujin province as the defeated Nationalists fled to Taiwan.

PLA's US made light tanks entered NanJing,
the wartime capital of the KMT Government.

Mao, Oct 1, 1949.
